Every pitcher wants to gain velocity and stay healthy.

Improving your hip rotation could be the answer.

First, let’s define what we are looking at.

Belt buckle facing straight towards home = 0 degrees

Belt buckle facing straight towards 3rd base (RHP) = 0 degrees

Ideally at foot plant your pelvis is 35-50 degrees open.

This means the center of your pelvis (belt buckle) is facing between 3rd and home at foot plant.

Here are 3 reasons why this is important:

1. Helps the arm be on time

The arm flip up and pelvis rotation are strongly linked together.

Notice below the timing of pelvis opening and arm flipping up.

2. Improves lead leg block

A good block requires the pelvis to be open enough.

If you land too closed, the pelvis is going to need to rotate more before the lead leg starts to extend.

This is very common in guys that drift forward with their knee.

3. Increases hip-shoulder separation

Hip-shoulder separation is the degree difference between the pelvis and shoulders.

The more closed your hips are, the harder it’ll be to create separation.

If your pelvis is at 45 degrees and your shoulders are slightly closed, you’ll have around 50 degrees of separation.

If your hips are closed around 10 degrees, now you are only getting 10-15 degrees of separation.
