Read time: 2 minutes

Every player wants to throw harder and for good reason.

Higher velocity can give you more opportunity, improve your stuff, and improve performance.

The problem isn't wanting to throw harder.

The problem is knowing how to do it. The path to do it is different for each player.

Today we want to share 5 possible reasons you don't throw 90 mph or the next attainable velocity for you.

Let's begin.

1. You aren't strong enough

This is often the lowest hanging fruit for younger players.

Get strong at the big 3:

  1. Squat
  2. Deadlift
  3. DB Chest press or Bench

General starting points:

Squat - 1.5x your BW for 3 reps

Deadlift - 2x your body weight for 3 reps

Bench - Full body weight for 3 reps

DB Bench - .8-.9x BW for 3 reps

These are general guidelines.

If you can do these basics, split stance and single leg work becomes more important.

2. You don’t have efficient mechanics

Your mechanical efficiency is important for velocity and health.

The fundamental of a good delivery:

• Load

• Rotation

• Arm timing

• Lead leg mechanics

The transition from segment to segment is more important then the positions by themselves.

Does your delivery flow and have rhythm?

3. You don’t manage your workload well

To throw hard, managing your volume and intensity is critical.

Low days should be low.

Medium days should be medium.

High days should be high.

Your throwing program should be very detailed and have a specific purpose.

4. You have too many movement limitations

This goes along with the delivery.

Are you able to move in and out of positions?

Or are you restricted in your hips, t-spine, shoulder?

This is often an important piece to improving the delivery and velocity.

5. You don’t spend enough time on the mound

To throw harder on the mound, you need to spend more time on the mound.

Are you a guy that can pulldown MUCH harder than you throw on the mound?

You likely need more work from your delivery then with a running start.
