The load sets the foundation for the rest of the delivery.
If you get the first move right, you're setting yourself up for success downstream.
The question is, what does a good load look like?
There are 3 fundamental keys.
Let's dive in.
1. Stable Back Foot
In order to load well, your back foot has to be grounded.
Signs you have an unstable back foot going into leg lift:
• Toes come up
• Heel slides out
• Weight shift forward/back
Your hip mobility will determine how much counter rotation you should have in your leg lift.
The more internal rotation you have, the more you might need to counter rotate.
Note: If your heel is sliding out, experiment with less counter rotation.
2. Hinging at the hips
As you go into your stride, your back hip should be loading behind your heel.
The amount of flexion in the back leg and how far back you hinge, will be dependent on the individuals movement capability.
Signs of a pushy load:
- Jumping of the rubber
- Weight shifts to the toes early
- Early extension of the back leg
This will impact your ability to rotate effectively without compensations.
3. Rotating into foot plant
As you go into foot plant your pelvis should be open between 35-50°.
If your:
• Back foot is stable
• Tension is created in the back hip
• Your load is good
Chances are your rotation into foot plant will be on point.
If your hips are too closed off at foot plant, it'll likely cause issues with the lead leg transferring force up the chain (poor lead leg block).
There is some nuance to this, but this is a general rule of thumb.
