Improving command is something many players want, but few understand how.

Todays newsletter will show you 5 simple, but effective ways you can improve your command.

Let's begin.

1. Elevate Heart Rate

What is the #1 difference between bullpens and games for most pitchers?

Their heart rate.

When you can’t control your heart rate it is difficult to think clearly and execute pitches.

It can distract you from the task at hand.

Learning how to control your breathing on the mound and finding your optimal heart rate is key.

Some players need to be more relaxed, while others need to be more tense.

Be yourself.

2. Variability Training

This includes:

  • Differential balls
  • Different delivery and tempo
  • Drills on the mound
  • Pitch sequencing

Challenge yourself to make minor adjustments pitch to pitch.

Every player should be doing some form of this.

Create a challenge that has the right amount of difficulty for the individual.

3. Practice with Pressure

The game is competitive and there are consequences.

No matter how big or small, adding a competition or putting something on the line can increase the focus in a bullpen.

This is great practice for what they will feel and deal with in a game.

4. Make Bullpens Gamelike

  • Throw bullpen on game mound
  • Have batter standing in
  • Simulate holding runners
  • Simulate at bats

Get comfortable dealing with situations that will happen in the game.

5. Develop a Pre-Pitch Routine

A good pre-pitch routine:

  • Assess previous pitch
  • Reset with breath
  • Positive self-talk
  • Visualize pitch
  • Commit

Do this every pitch and watch your execution improve.
