Happy New Year!
Today I want to show you 5 changeup grips that can yield crazy movement via seam effects.
2 pitches can have identical spin metrics, but move entirely different.
The seam orientation plays a HUGE role in pitch movement.
The image below demonstrates this phenomenon.
The top one has 4 seam orientation and the bottom one has 2 seam orientation.
The top one has 8.5" VB/-13.1" HB.
The bottom one has 4.5" VB/-14.1 HB.
A 4" difference in vertical break purely because of the seam orientation!
If you are interested in running your own pitch simulations, checkout Baseball Cloud's ShapeShiftR here.
Now that we understand what seam orientation can do, lets dive into the 5 grips.
Couple things to note for all of these grips:
- Do not force pronation
- Tinker with pinky position
- Looser grip usually works best
- Feel the ball slip to your fingertips
- Play with how much you curl index finger
Also, if you would like to watch a 4 minute video of me walking through these grips, click here.
Grip #1 - Traditional 2 Seam Changeup
Grip #2 - Further Back 2 Seam Changeup
Grip #3 - Across Horseshoe Changeup
Grip #4 - Split Changeup (Kevin Gausman Grip)
Grip #5 - 1 Seam Changeup
The first 4 grips typically work best with a spin efficiency between 65-90%.
The 1 seam grip allows for higher efficiency, even as high as 95%.
Click here for a video on how to create a dot ball for the first 4 grips.
Click here for a video on how to create a dot ball for the 1 seam grip for RHP and click here for LHP.
These aren't the only grips that work for effective changeups, but they are a great starting point.
Like any other pitch, tinker with the grip as needed until you get the result you are looking for.
The dots will provide good visual feedback to let you know if you're on the right track.
That's all for today.
See you next week!
