A good time to home is a 1.35 or less.
This should give your catcher enough time to throw the batter out more times than not.
Truthfully, I am not a fan of pitchers using multiple types of leg lifts to home with runners on.
Instead of having a full leg lift on one pitch and a slide step on the next, do the same thing EVERY time.
This will keep things simple and you won't have to guess when you need to be quick to home.
Plus, your command will likely be inconsistent when you are changing your time to home every pitch.
Today I want to show you how to slide step to home WITHOUT losing velocity.
Often times when pitchers slide step they don't put any force into their back leg.
They essentially fall towards home.
If you are going to do a traditional slide step to home, you have to get into your back leg.
Let me show you how.
From the set position, your first move after picking up your front foot is to sit down into your back leg.
A cue that I like to use is to feel like all of your weight is falling into your back leg as you drive towards home.
The only difference between this and a full leg lift is you are getting into your load immediately instead of after peak leg left.
Coming set standing fairly tall can make it easier to feel your weight shift down into the back leg.
Tinker with the set position to find what works for you.
Take a look at the 2 examples below:
3 Reminders:
- Come set fairly tall
- First move is into your back leg
- Have the same time to home with runners on (<1.35)
That's all for today.
See you next week!
