One of my favorite ways to improve as a coach is to learn from people and resources outside of baseball.

They can provide a unique perspective and allow you to see things differently.

Today, I want to show you one of those things.

It's called the Shamrock System.

Frank Shamrock (all-time great MMA fighter) developed a training system called plus, minus, and equal.

Lets break them down one by one.

Plus

This is where you learn from someone ahead of you.

As a player, this could be someone that is in college baseball, while you are in high school.

If you are a coach it could be someone that has coached college baseball for 15 years and you are in year 1.

Or it could even be a peer that is playing or coaching at the same level as you, they are just much further ahead in some way.

You want to find someone like this that you can learn from, ask questions, and connect with.

Minus

In the minus part of the system you are the teacher. You are the one with more experience, helping someone else.

Whether you think so or not, you are ahead of someone in some way. You have an opportunity to teach.

The beauty of teaching is it actually makes you better.

You are reminded of details that maybe you forgot about. It reinforces and reminds you of what you already know.

It also forces you to question if what you think is actually right since you are about to teach it to someone else.

Equal

This is the fun one. Time to get the competitive juices flowing!

This is someone that is at a similar level as you.

This is the person that throws the same speed as you and you are competing with them on a velo day.

An equal will bring out the competitiveness and push you to go the extra mile.

I love this system and think it can apply to coaches and players.

There is value in all 3 of these categories to becoming the best we can be.

In Summary

Plus: Learn from someone ahead of you.

Minus: Teach someone with less experience than you.

Equal: Compete with someone that is at the same level as you.

That's all for today.

See you next week!
