Bullpens are where pitchers improve their craft.

With an unlimited amount of things you could work on, having a clear plan is a necessity.

Today, I want to talk about something I see pitchers neglect from the amateur level, all the way to the professional level.

It's something that is so obvious, yet most don't do it unless you tell them to.

Throwing out of the stretch.

How often do you see a pitcher throw an entire bullpen only out of the wind up?

Or even in a pre-game bullpen?

Far too often.

It’s often said, you make your most important pitches with runners on base.

So why don’t we practice it?

43% of all pitches in the MLB are with runners on base.

51% of all pitches in D1 baseball are with runners on base.

If half our pitches are with runners on, don’t you think we should practice it?

Not only should you practice it, but also make sure your time to the plate is 1.4 or less.

Practicing at a 1.6 and then trying to be quicker in game isn’t going to help much.

Bullpen tip:

Throw the first half of your pitches out of the stretch.

Don’t give yourself the opportunity to start out of the wind up and only leave 5 pitches for the stretch.

Many things in baseball are out of your control.

This isn’t one of them.

Practice what you’ll have to do in the game.

Change your looks, simulate holding runners, and practice executing pitches with the same time to the plate you'll need in game.

That's all for today.

See you next week!
