This past weekend I ran my second 3-day pitching masterclass.
The weekend was filled with educating the participants on their mechanics and pitch arsenal.
The key tools used for evaluation were:
- Kinatrax motion capture
- AMTI force plates
- TrackMan
- Edgertronic camera
To help educate the participants, I gave 2+ hours worth of presentations walking through what the data means and how to apply it.
It's one thing to know the "what". It's a whole other thing to know the "how".
While changes don't usually happen instantly, you can start to get a glimpse fairly quickly with something like pitch design.
For example, one player had both a slider and curveball. The problem was, they were very similar pitches.
If he was going to have both pitches, the slider needed to be different.
Based on the rest of his arsenal it made the most sense to change the slow, loopy slider into a hard, bullet slider. We played with a few grips and found the off-centered 4-seam grip to work best.
You'll notice some are labeled slider (yellow) and some labeled cutter (maroon). This was simply for us to distinguish 2 grips we tried. The cutter label ended up being the one we stuck with.
Even though it had less depth on average compared to slider label, it was 5 mph harder and he even started getting <5" of IVB towards the end.
As an added bonus we changed his changeup grip (teal color) and saw tremendous progress immediately with a kick change grip.
It was an exciting weekend to say the least. The true work begins when the players go back home.
To help with the process, I provided a 2 month program to get them started including throwing plan, drill package, bullpens scripts, lifting, mobility, and arm care.

That's all for today.
